Free Acupuncture Day on April 1st at North Seattle Community Acupuncture

A free event passed along by a local Pinehurst Business:

What’s better than a free acupuncture treatment?
A free treatment for both you and your friend!

Introduce someone new to the North Sea this Friday
(April 1st) and both of you will receive free treatments.

Sure, you could go out for coffee or take each other to
the movies, but healing with someone you care about,
in comfortable recliners, surrounded by soothing music?
Now that’s a worthwhile experience!

How can you make this happen?
Sign up for an appointment on our website www.northseaforme.com
See you Friday. You’ll be thankful you skipped the movie!

Give Input on Aging in the Neighborhood

This could be a good place to make a pitch for sidewalks and public transportation- that’s what I did. 🙂  This survey is for all ages (we’re all aging).

Pinehurst Seattle,

Aging and Disability Services (ADS) needs community input! Every four years, ADS prepares a new Area Plan on Aging for King County, which guides our work. As we prepare to draft a new plan for 2012 through 2015, we need to hear from Seattle and King County residents.

We invite residents of all ages to complete an online questionnaire. We especially encourage people who are age 60 or older, adults with disabilities, and family caregivers to respond.

The questionnaire is posted at www.agingkingcounty.org. You can also get there via an article in Senior Digest about the planning process. Print copies are available on request.

Responses from this questionnaire will inform development of strategies to promote quality of life, independence and choice for older people and adults with disabilities, which will be carried out over the next four years.

Everybody is aging, so everybody should care.

For more information about the Area Plan on Aging or the questionnaire, contact ADS planner Karen Winston (206-684-0706).

Thanks in advance for completing the survey yourself and for helping to spread the word that we want everyone’s input.

15th Ave NE Bridge Construction Project Update

Here is an update, as of 3/28/2011, from the project manager:

The weather calmed enough to allow the contractor to place the concrete deck overlay last Wednesday, which was the last major task to be completed. The contractor is working on the installation of the separation barrier, which could not be installed until after the deck overlay was placed. At this time we are expecting the roadway to be open to traffic by April 15th.”

SATURDAY Work Party At Thornton Creek Park #1

Where: Thornton Creek Park #1. Trailhead at 1100 NE130th St. Park at end of the road or near 12th NE & NE 130th
When: This Saturday, March 26th, 9am -3pm. Rain or shine. Helping just part of the time is good too.
Who: Neighbors, Friends Of Thornton Creek Park #1 members, YOU…and that strong friend of yours. Anyone 10 and over is welcome.
Why: We need to repair social trails. For a change, it’ll be a work party that involves brain as well as brawn. You will be fixing a bridge and trails, cutting/placing cedar branches to make corduroy trails over wet spots, (maybe) maintenance on the nature viewing station, (maybe) draining a hole created by a recently downed tree. There’s also simple wood-chip spreading to be done up near the road. Most all of these things I’d characterize as having a big pay-off for not much work. 🙂
What to Bring: Dress in layers. Gloves. high boots. Shovel. Extra points for you if you bring any of the following: wader boots, a favorite wood saw, battery powered saws-all w/ branch blade, a small sledgehammer, a wheelbarrel, a few large rocks/boulders (min 12″ diameter), one to six 3′ or 4′ metal stakes, cold beer for afterward? 🙂
Food/Drink: Bring your own

It’s much better to RSVP (to Kelly below) if you can, or just show up ready to rumble!

Important Nickelsville Meeting

The Deputy Mayor of Community, Darryl Smith passed along a message on an upcoming meeting on Nickelsville. It’s a good chance to learn more about what’s going on, ask questions, and provide feedback. I’d also suggest taking a look at some of the stories on Lake City Live where they’ve covered this extensively.

We would like to hold a meeting with you and, the Nickelsville Community currently housed at Fire Station 39 at Seattle Mennonite Church from 6:00-7:00 PM on Wednesday, March 30. We know that Lake City residents may still have questions about impacts related to the fire station’s inhabitation and the city’s role in providing shelter to people in need. This meeting will provide a forum to discuss those questions.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Seattle Mennonite Church:
3120 Northeast 125th Street
Seattle, WA 98125

[EDIT:] This was moved to Lake City’s Seattle Mennonite Church and I’ve updated the post above and included the address.
[EDIT 2:] The City sent out a new date for the meeting, now 3/30.

Discovering & Preserving Thornton Creek History, 3/23 7pm

The Thornton Creek Watershed Oversight Council invites you to join us for a
presentation and discussion on “Discovering and Preserving The History of Thornton Creek” with Vicki Stiles, Executive Director of the Shoreline Historical Museum

March 23, 2011, 7:00 pm
At Shoreline City Hall, Room 301
17500 Midvale Avenue North

If you have wanted to collect stories and old photos of Thornton Creek but did not know where to submit them for preservation, or have your own stories and old photos about the history of Thornton Creek that you want to have preserved and/or made available in a publication about Thornton Creek, you will want to attend this meeting to connect and network with others and the Shoreline Museum.
Maybe you know someone who has lived on or near Thornton Creek for 50 to 60 years and think their stories should be documented but want to know how to proceed. This meeting is a good place to start.

Sponsored by Thornton Creek Watershed Oversight Council as part of its regular bi-monthly meeting.

My Big Climb (for Cancer Research)

While we’ve covered many fundraisers in the last, this one is much more personal than usual. I’m participating in the Big Climb this Saturday (March 20th) in memory of my mother who passed away in December. I am collecting donations through April 8 for this great cause.

Donation Link:
http://www.llswa.org/goto/Duggan

I’m racing with my fiancĂ©e and the ActiveX team from work that I organized. I’m hoping to beat my time of 14 minutes from last year but meetings and work on my basement always seems to get in the way of training.

What is the Big Climb?
The Big Climb is a stairclimb up the Columbia Center in downtown Seattle. There are 69 flights of stairs, 1311 steps, and 788ft of vertical elevation. Although it will be challenging, it pales in comparison to what blood cancer patients go through. All proceeds benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Who is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society?
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services. The mission of LLS is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Since its founding in 1949, LLS has invested more than $600 million for research specifically targeting blood cancers.
