Traffic Justice Summit – October 14th

Each year in Washington state, nearly 500 pedestrians and bicyclists are killed or critically injured by motor vehicles. Very few of the drivers in these incidents are ever held accountable. Come and hear more about the state of traffic justice for pedestrians and bicyclists on our roads today. State Senate Judiciary Chair Adam Kline, Seattle city Attorney Tom Carr and City Council Public Safety Chair Tim Burgess will be joined by researchers, experts, advocates, families, friends and victims as we all learn more about the facts.

Center for Employment and Education at North Seattle Community College: Groundbreaking October 13th

Groundbreaking will take place at North Seattle Community College tomorrow for a new Center for Employment and Education.

The following information and the above image of the future center were provided by North Seattle Community College:

The new Center for Employment and Education at North Seattle Community College (NSCC) is designed to set a new standard in efficiency and service. It will be housed in a new building on campus and will serve the unemployed through five different community colleges, including North Seattle, Edmonds, Shoreline, Lake Washington Technical, and Seattle Central. Area employers will also be on site and participating in the project.

Locating the new center at North Seattle Community College was an easy choice because community colleges are recognized locally and nationally as the single most important resource for educating and training the un- and under-employed. NSCC President Ronald LaFayette notes that “the federal stimulus money will be gone by early 2011, when the center will open. And since unemployment tends to lag three years behind economic recovery, we will open while people still need additional help.”

Designed by Schacht Aslani Architects, the 46,000 square foot facility not only brings the four agencies together, but also fosters collaboration between them through the absence of departmental boundaries. “The design facilitates the new service model of teamwork between agencies,” said Cima Malek-Aslani, Principal, Schacht Aslani Architects. “The open office layout encourages staff collaboration through access to shared information, while the enclosed meeting and conference rooms allow for confidentiality.”

The building features multiple sustainable strategies including a 7,000 square foot green roof, maximum daylighting, energy savings and water use reduction. It is targeting Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification, with an anticipated 26% energy savings and 46% reduction in water use.

The all-in-one location will streamline services related to employment services, basic skills education, career training, unemployment insurance, food stamps, child support, transportation services, welfare, health care and other state aid. Metro has even taken steps to re-route a bus line so that there is a direct link to regional transit centers. This fundamental change in how services are provided addresses a long standing problem in a new and creative way.

If you have any questions on crime prevention or if you would like to form a block watch, please contact Diane Horswill (diane.horswill@seattle.gov or at (206) 684-7711) at the North Precinct. Also, there is some good information on crime prevention here.

Please note that 4 or 5 of the burglaries were through unlocked or open doors or windows.

Yesterday’s Seattle Public Schools new assignment program public meetings

I attended the Eckstein community meeting on the new assignment program and School Board member Peter Maier’s community meeting yesterday.

There were at least 200 people at the Eckstein meeting and about 10 at Peter Maier’s meeting. The most significant things I heard relevant to Pinehurst are:

  • There is some thought of moving the high school boundary so that some Pinehurst families would attend Ingraham while others would attend Nathan Hale. The reason for this is that Greenwood families want to be included in the Ballard high school area. If that boundary is moved north, it could cause the eastern boundary for Ingraham to move east into Pinehurst. Other school leaders who I spoke with doubt that the Ballard boundary could be moved north as they feel Ballard high school will already be oversubscribed and if anything, the boundary will need to move south, or some Greenlake area students will need to be assigned to Roosevelt.
  • There was also significant discussion regarding whether all kids in the proposed Eckstein boundary would be able to attend. Enrollment projections for middle school assume that a few hundred Eckstein area middle-schoolers would choose Jane Addams. SPS does not have a stated back-up plan of how they will assign students next year if Eckstein is over-subscribed.

There is also a good discussion of the Eckstein meeting on the Seattle Public Schools community blog here.

Free workshop to help parents support children in math – October 15th

Explorations in Math, a nonprofit organization that partners with schools to improve attitudes about math, will be holding a workshop at Lake City Library workshops this week to help parents support their elementary-age children in math. Mathways is a series of free workshops, in which parents can learn math games that are quick and easy to play with their children. The workshop will help children increase their own confidence in and enthusiasm for math. Some Mathways workshops will include additional presentations by Seattle school representatives who will discuss the District math curriculum. These presentations will provide tips on how to help children with the Everyday Math assignments they bring home from school.

7–8 p.m.
Lake City Public Library
12501 28th Ave. N.E.

North District Council

My name is Phillip Duggan and I’m the new North District Council Representative for Pinehurst. I wanted to share some info from the latest meeting that I thought was relevant to the neighborhood.

  • Bridging the Gap / Neighborhood Street Fund projects are being considered for the next round of funding.
    • The North District Council is going to be ranking our projects to pass along our recommendations and I’m working to make sure the sidewalk on 115th is one of our top priorities.
    • This project has been proposed previously and people have been working to get it done for a long time now
    • Some residents from Pinehurst showed up at this meeting to support this project which helped show how important it is to our community
  • There was a update on the Mayor’s proposed budget from the city.
    • The economy is forcing many cuts though it’s an early proposal so I suspect things will change
    • On a positive local note, the early plans call for the Lake City Library to stay open 7 days a week with extended hours.
If anybody has any questions please let me know.
