Pinehurst Mugs

Pinehurst Community Council has a limited number of 11 oz Pinehurst mugs available for $10 each. Even on sale and with free shipping they were almost $10 each, so not much goes into our coffers, but that’s ok, it’s good to have our name out there, eh? And it has the logo on both sides – works for righties AND lefties. Take one to work so co-workers know where you live. Spread the word about how great Pinehurst is!

Would you like one? Email nancy@pinehurstseattle.org. Free delivery.

Volunteer IN Our Neighborhood

LicoriceFern

I recently posted about some volunteer opportunities through EarthCorp and just got sent another local opportunity in the area. It’s both Saturday March 1st and 8th. This is right in our neighborhood, just south of Jackson Park Golf Course. Looks like a lot of fun.

Everyone can help! Please join the Friends of Licorice Fern Natural Area, this Saturday, March 1st, 10AM -1PM for our planting work party and tour. If you don’t know the park, come explore this gem bordering Thornton Creek! If you do know it, help restore and care for the forest. You’ll find our new trails more friendly, and the plants in pots placed for easy planting. No experience required! Enjoy the sound of the creek and the birds. Or just take a tour to see what we’ve accomplished. All ages welcome, bring the kids! For more information and to RSVP: http://seattle.cedar.greencitypartnerships.org/event/4960/

If you can’t make it this Saturday, we will be out in the park again the following Saturday, March 8th, to finish the planting: http://seattle.cedar.greencitypartnerships.org/event/4961/

SPD – Get Your Bike Back

Was your bike stolen? SPD has about 500 “found” bikes in storage at its Evidence Warehouse. Each bike was abandoned somewhere in the city, then later recovered by officers. SPD may have your bike, and they’d like to reunite you with your wheels.

The new Twitter feed, @Getyourbikeback can help. SPD will be tweeting general descriptions of the “found” bikes as they come in.

You don’t absolutely need a serial number to get your bike back, but it does expedite the process. If you don’t have your serial number, then how about a sales receipt for the bike?  Or a picture of your bicycle (better yet, of you riding the bike)? Can you provide a vivid description of the bike, including details about special toe clips, stickers, scratches, dents or any other unique traits your bike might have?  They need a bit more info than “I think that’s my missing stock black Specialized Rock Hopper.”

The easiest way to get it back is if you reported the bike stolen. Just provide your case number (if it’s been tweeted on @GetYourBikeBack) and the bike’s serial number (if you have it), and send an email to FindMyBike@Seattle.Gov, along with your contact information. Don’t email to ask about bikes that AREN’T listed on @GetYourBikeBack.

If you didn’t file a report and see it on the Twitter account, send an email to FindMyBike@Seattle.Gov referencing the tweeted bike description, and provide as many details as you can. Again, please don’t email to ask about bikes that AREN’T listed on @GetYourBikeBack.

Here is a handy dandy flow chart:

GetYourBikeBack

If you aren’t currently missing a bike, take this opportunity to take a close-up picture of your bike’s serial number, along with a few additional photos of your bike for good measure.  Not sure where to find your serial number? You can find out right here.

Dial 2-1-1 for Assistance

211

2-1-1 is a free, confidential, and easy-to-remember phone number that serves as a lifeline for millions across the country each year. With a single phone call to 2-1-1, those in need receive information and local referrals to essential health and human services such as:

• Where to go for food and shelter
• What to do if the utilities are turned off
• Where to get free or low-cost health and dental care services
• How to get rent or mortgage assistance
• Where to find job assistance and employment resources
• How to get help with civil legal issues
• Where to find services for Veterans

People in search of critical services often don’t know where to begin looking for help and can get overwhelmed when searching for assistance.  By calling 2-1-1, they can get that information with a single call.

Information and referral services like King County 2-1-1 streamline the process by assessing each caller’s unique needs and referring them to agencies best equipped to assist them. 2-1-1 is much more than directory assistance. Callers also get useful information about how to access services in a complex system that is often difficult to navigate.

Seattle Police Seeking Information

Seattle_Police_BadgeAt the February meeting of the North Precinct Advisory Council, the North Precinct Captain asked members for help. He is interested to learn from citizens “what are your fears?” So he asked us all to go back to our communities and ask this question, compile responses, and send them to him.

He said that an important way for the police to know what the citizens are thinking, worrying about, afraid of regarding public safety, is to ask them and then to  listen to them. This information will help the police do a better job.

So, please help us compile some responses. Are you afraid to walk outside at night? Afraid of having your car stolen? Afraid to go to parks alone? Afraid of police brutality? Let us know.

You may respond in the comments section below, or if you want privacy, email nancy@pinehurstseattle.org. We will not use names when we compile the responses.

Thank you!

Pinehurst School Variance Meeting on March 13

PinehurstSchoolRecommendedDesignConceptThe Seattle School District is requesting a waiver (departure) from some City zoning regulations for the construction of a new Jane Addams K-8 @ Pinehurst. The District plans to demolish the existing school and construct a new Kindergarten thru 8th grade school including gym/commons, library, administrative offices, classrooms and other learning areas at 11530 12th Avenue. The School District is requesting modifications for increase lot coverage, greater than allowed height, less than required on-site parking spaces and on-street bus loading.

The process for considering this request includes hearings before an advisory committee composed of neighbors and School District and City representatives. The Committee will gather and evaluate public comment on the departure requests. It can recommend a waiver (departure) from some regulations and any relevant conditions to be applied to minimize its impacts on the surrounding neighborhood, or it can recommend denial. The Committee may make its recommendation following this meeting or hold up to two additional meetings prior to making its recommendation.

The Committee has been formed and will host its first public meeting on Thursday, March 13 at 6:30 pm at the Pinehurst Building (Library), 11530 12th Avenue NE. Continue reading Pinehurst School Variance Meeting on March 13

Pinehurst Game Night! (+Meeting)

Pinehurst Game Night!
Thursday, February 27th
6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Pinehurst Shelterhouse

To celebrate the fact that the shelterhouse at Pinehurst Playfield (that so many neighbors worked so hard on renovating) is available for our use again, I wanted to have a community game night. I’m planing to bring a ton of board games (strategy games, family games, classics) and hoping others can bring some too. This will just be a good chance to socialize with your neighbors and enjoy each other’s company.

And because it’s so timely we are going to start with a quick presentation at the meeting by Cleanscapes at 6:00 pm. It should be quick and then people will have time to think about what sorts of projects we might want.

CleanScapes, your neighborhood solid waste collection company, sponsors an annual $50,000 Neighborhood Waste Reduction Rewards competition and we are pleased to announce that your community is a winner! CleanScapes’ Thursday collection area is the 2012/2013 winner and includes portions of the following neighborhoods: Maple Leaf, Lake City, Victory Heights, Pinehurst and Northgate. Representatives from these neighborhoods will chose a project(s) totaling $50,000 for construction in the Thursday collection area.
